Research at Antwerp Maritime Academy (AMA) is based on interdisciplinary questions and an integrated approach. The academy capitalises on its unique position within national and international maritime networks and actively seeks collaborations across disciplinary boundaries.

AMA combines practice-oriented and applied research. Applied research builds on fundamental scientific knowledge and applies it to real-life situations and cases. Practice-oriented research arises from concrete questions within education and professional practice. It aims to develop multidisciplinary solutions that can be put to immediate use in the field. Both forms adhere to academic traditions and quality standards of full-fledged research. They rely on methodological precision: a correct experimental design, statistical analysis, design engineering, objective surveying, and a clearly formulated research question following the SMART‑principle.

For AMA, academisation does not mean abandoning its practical approach, but rather strengthening research methodology and deepening insights. This keeps the research firmly anchored in maritime reality while contributing to scientific progress and innovation within the sector.
