IMEC31 in Mariehamn, Aland

Conference delegates visited Aboa Mare’s premises (Novia University of Applied Sciences) and toured the Wärtsilä facilities in Turku, before heading to Åland on the Viking Grace. The four-day conference was hosted by Åland University of Applied Sciences and offered participants the chance to share knowledge and experience related to communication at sea and, in particular, Maritime English issues.

HZS was represented by Alison Noble (Chair IMLA-International Maritime English Conference), Pieter Decancq and Ludwina Van Son. For the first time, a student was part of the team. Roy Peters spent a month in Turku in April 2019, conducting research into the use of Maritime English in the bridge simulator. The findings from the comparative study of Aboa Mare and HZS were in a paper authored by Noble and Peters and presented at the conference. Pieter Decancq also gave a paper presentation on semiotics and Ludwina Van Son ran a workshop on context in discourse. Details and full scripts of papers are available on IMLA-IMEC website http://www.imla.co/imec/ or at https://www.ha.ax/en/about-us/imec2019/
